Curtain Call for the Box Burlesque Club?

Simon HammersteinPoor Simon Hammerstein. First, the burlesque club owner's employee abusing-and-sexing ways were exposed when one of his star burlesque acts quit the Box, along with the tech staff.

Then, CityFile rightly and hilariously accused him of setting the entire financial crisis into motion by reminding us that "It all goes back to Friday, March 7th when sleazy club owner Simon Hammerstein, headband-wearing scenester Arden Wohl, gay party boy Derek Blasberg, heiress Amanda Hearst, and gala staple Claire Bernard turned up at the New York Stock Exchange to ring the closing bell."

Now, the Box has been denied a renewal for its liquor license, the Observer reports. Then the neighbors showed up, wielding virtual pitchforks and complaining about getting carded while trying to get into their buildings:

"Alleged misrepresentation is just one of the club’s—er, dinner theater’s!—problems. Residents of the surrounding area say they are tired of wading through a sea of bottle-addled hipsters every time they walk down the block—the place has apparently been getting noise complaints since day one. Even more damning, people from the building next door showed up to inform the board that they often get carded trying to get into their apartments."

Chat Noir Club Miami: Part Nightclub, Part Burlesque Show

Chat Noir Club Miami
Where else in Miami can you indulge your inner fetishist among an array of drag shows, comedy, spoken word, bellydancing, live music and contortionists on a Monday evening? Part nightclub, part burlesque show, The Chat Noir (French for black cat), is a 3-month-old extravaganza with the motto ''Two parts circus, one part burlesque, a pinch of class and a dash of trash'' and celebrity hosts like Dita Von Teese and Lady Bunny.

The intoxicating spectacle begins at the front door, as agile stilt walkers, accordion players and the signature Chat Noir cat actually make waiting in line fun. There's a first time for everything on the beach, right? Inside, the mixed crowd includes locals, drag queens, professionals and even some tourists. ''This is the kind of place where you can be yourself,'' explained Tony Ferro of promotions group, the Pennyback Boyz.

The gothic and romantic ambience of Dream Nightclub, located in the thick of Washington Avenue nightlife, serves as the perfect backdrop for the myriad mischievous characters. Complimentary martinis and hors d'oeuvres until midnight are just the icing on the cake -- devil's food cake, that is.

Worried that a night at a cabaret might interfere with your work schedule the following day? Fear not: this party starts early and ends at a reasonable hour. Doors open at 10 p.m. and the show runs until 1 a.m., followed by an open format session into the early morning hours with DJ Shannon.

To get on the guest list, call 786-326-9477 and receive complimentary admission. For those without such foresight, it'll be $20 at the door. Burlesque: Seattle's Best Kept Secret?

People say a lot of things about Seattle: It's rainy; it's progressive; it's metronatural. But words like sexy and edgy don't usually make the list.

Well, at least they didn't make my list - until now. Recently, I was surprised to learn that Seattle has one of the biggest and baddest (that's a compliment) burlesque scenes in the country. You could even say it's been a pioneer in burlesque's recent resurgence. Here are just a few of its offerings, considering there are too many to list:

Burlesque isn't for everybody (and it's not for all ages either - be sure to check listings). But like it or not, its resurgence is a reminder that Seattle isn't just about nature and technology - it's also got a colorful and subversive cultural side that's worth a mention, especially to my visitors from New York who think they've seen it all.

Beyonce Loves Burlesque

Some singers are all talk. But Beyonce isn’t one of them. When she sings “I’ll be your naughty girl…” she’s not kidding!

And the “Bootylicious” singer isn’t ashamed of a little risqué entertainment. She reportedly attended a Burlesque show at New York City’s “The Box” last Thursday, and wasn’t shy about her praise for the performers.

According to a source, “Beyoncé was really making the most of the burlesque strip show. She was on the table in the VIP balcony cheering loudly as two girls got naked and licked each others’ feet. She stayed until 3:30 in the morning.”

Future of NYC Forty Duece in jeopardy

If you think New York City is all about big business and loose morals, think again.

Residents of the formerly-grungy and increasingly gentrified Lower East Side have recently banded together to stop the opening of a swanky burlesque club backed by aging rockers Sting and David Bowie. Earlier this year, Ivan Kane's Forty Deuce excitedly announced its foray into New York, promising a classy entertainment experience and late-night burgers.

Then community activists took up arms, claiming that Forty Deuce would be nothing more than a glorified strip joint. The project was unanimously rejected today. The irony of conservatives fighting for the integrity of the Lower East Side was clearly lost in the midst.

With the future of Forty Deuce in jeopardy, where does one satisfy that late night burlesque fix? Glad you asked. Read on to find out where the tassels are still swinging.

Mr. Choade's Upstairs/Downstairs in the Slipper Room on Orchard Street claims to be the longest running burlesque show in New York. Whether that's true or not is tough to say, but once you see the rock 'n roll-infused shenanigans, you won't care. Saturday shows start at 10:30 and tickets are just $5.

Filthy_burlesque_perrinpost_3 Every Friday, Corio on West Broadway presents the city's newest spectacular called, appropriately, Filthy Gorgeous. The show features burlesque stars Gigi La Femme, Angie Pontani, and many others who practice the arts of titillation. Doors open at 7:30 and tickets are $20.

If you're feeling brave, the New York School of Burlesque will bring out your inner exhibitionist.

Burlesque owner says Downtown’s grit is it

Nightclub kingpin Ivan Kane almost has it all: an L.A. hotspot that attracts more stars than a Kabbalah convention, a Bravo reality series about the opening of his Las Vegas club, and a dancer for a wife named Champagne Suzy.

But what he really wants is one of his signature clubs in his hometown of New York City. “I felt this was a community that welcomed artists,” he said of the plan last week.

To get that club, he’s trying to appease community opponents and convince them that his plans for the neighborhood have more to do with his heritage than his bottom line — despite past statements to the contrary.

Lower Manhattan residents near the site of his planned Forty Deuce burlesque “speakeasy” on Kenmare St. between Bowery and Elizabeth St. say they don’t want Kane’s massive, risque club to send the neighborhood down the tubes, even though it’s backed by singers David Bowie and Sting, and would replace a restaurant reported to have mob connections.

Kane lost round one of the clash with his detractors last Tuesday, when they got Community Board 2’s business committee to withdraw its approval of a liquor license for Kane. His chances are slim to win round two on Thursday night, when the full board votes on Kane’s license request.

But Kane can still win the bout, because the issuer of the licenses — the State Liquor Authority in Albany — can disregard the board’s wishes.

Last Tuesday’s decision came after a highly orchestrated presentation by Kane in which he assured listeners “there’s no nudity, no topless, no G-strings” in his clubs, where a typical cover charge runs from $10 to $75 and female performers put on two 20-minute shows per evening.

“I believe a lot of the opposition to the venue is based on a lot of misconceptions about what we are,” Kane said.

Kane’s 73-year-old mother, Helayne, criticized her son’s opponents for their fervor. “I don’t understand such venom. It’s like a lynching,” she said in an interview last week. “He’s a wonderful family man.”

The vocal presence of Kane’s aging mother, family friends and other supporters did not sway the committee. Nor did his attorney’s assurance that the club had the support of Bowie and Sting.

“There’s no rumor or innuendo about it,” attorney Robert Bookman said after the hearing. “They’re both investors.” Bookman said both singers had filled out questionnaires required of all investors for a business’s liquor license application, but he declined to put a dollar amount on the entertainers’ involvement.

Kane named his clubs Forty Deuce to conjure up images from his childhood of burlesque entertainment’s heyday on 42nd St. in Times Square, according to the clubs’ Web site. “As a kid growing up in New York, I used to cut school and go down to the burlesque houses that were just waning at the time,” he told an interviewer last year.

Helayne Kane said that her son had always hoped to return to build a club in Manhattan, where he grew up. “It’s something important,” she said. “He wants to come back to his roots.”

Yet gentrification, not genealogy, may explain why Kane is so keen on 19 Kenmare as the site for Forty Deuce. In a conversation with online radio host Eric Schwartzman last year, Kane equated grittiness with cool, and he derided club owners who flocked to squeeze into gentrified locales like Chelsea’s meatpacking district.

“It became the hip spot for nightclubs and restaurants in New York, and then what happened? It becomes over-gentrified and oversaturated, more bridges and tunnels, and all of a sudden the perception shifts,” Kane said.

In order to avoid the stiff competition in such already-gentrified areas and keep your brand hot, Kane said, “you’ve got to be ahead of the curve.”

James Famularo, the broker who helped Kane buy 19 Kenmare, identified the area as one that was just barely ahead of that curve. “It’s going from a gritty Lower East Side, Little Italy borderline neighborhood into a more desirable location, with restaurants and nightspots,” said Famularo, who declined to comment directly on the Kane deal. “I get 100 phone calls a week for space in this neighborhood.”

Forty Deuce would fill the space left by Little Charlie’s Clam House, which Famularo said acquired a name over the years as an occasional mob hangout.

“There’s stories about it,” said Famularo. “I’ve eaten there maybe 20 times before I sold the building. I think the whole mob thing is pretty much a thing of the past,” he said, adding that venues like Forty Deuce helped the neighborhood transcend its checkered history.

But many area residents say they’re skeptical that Forty Deuce will improve the neighborhood, given its scale and its character.

“Burlesque is something you’d see in Atlantic City, or Vegas, not in a neighborhood where there’s so many children,” said Debra Vitale, a lifelong Little Italy resident.

Wylie Stecklow of the Nolita Neighborhood Association was less concerned about Forty Deuce’s racy theme than its impact on traffic congestion, pollution and noise.

“I have no problems with a burlesque club in theory. I have a problem with any bar or club or restaurant or lounge that’s going to be putting three service bars in this space,” Stecklow said. “It may be that we’re at a saturation point for liquor licenses.”

Stecklow added that he didn’t want the neighborhood to go the way of other, more gentrified blocks in the Lower East Side.

“They’re becoming more of a Disneyland or Vegas,” he said.

Famularo said such concerns were pointless. “Gentrification is inevitable,” he said. “There’s no way to stop it. And who would want to? It brings money into the neighborhood. It brings people into the neighborhood who wouldn’t otherwise be there.”

As for Kane’s detractors, Famularo guessed their objections had little to do with burlesque at all.

“The people that are opposing this project are opposing everything,” he said. “These people object to park benches.”

Sex and Glita Burlesque 2007

Dirty, sexy, smart, satirical and utterly fabulous – who could it be but the “totally queer” duo from strip show Gurlesque?

Sex Intents and Glita Supernova have been dusting off their polka dot skirts and red sequined heels for their first show of the season at Arq.

Or, in the words of Sex and Glita, Gurlesque will be “opening her beautiful beef curtains and inviting you all back into her folds”.

The Gurlesque strip club “for women and trannies” has been captivating audiences since September 2000 when Sex and Glita catapulted onto the scene with a unique show.

Created as a means of providing a space for women to explore and interpret the art of striptease, Gurlesque has since entailed everything from “hilarious comedy and drag to seriously sexy, in your face, pussy strutting”.

Sex and Glita had been working as strippers in more conventional establishments when they came up with the idea for Gurlesque.

Women responded to the first show, Glita said, “totally awesomely”.

But the active feminists from local universities were a little less than kind, Sex added.

“They thought it was really wrong,” she said. “They said there was nothing empowering in striptease and told us we were setting women back.”

Undeterred, Sex and Glita rolled out their interpretation of striptease, challenging taboos and turning whatever society deemed “attractive and sexy” on its head.

Sex and Glita have hosted and performed at each Gurlesque show, backed up by special guest performers who Glita said are told to simply “operate free of censorship and our opinions”.

“We like performers to bring their version of sexual politics, and their sexual fantasies,” she said.

“Which means pretty much anyone can do what they want.”

When Gurlesque launched onto the scene, the art of burlesque was a largely undiscovered medium. Strip-tease artists had been performing their work alongside sex performance artists and sex cabaret acts.

And then the Gurlesque girls came along, quickly becoming innovators for their kinky and controversial style of burlesque performance.

Burlesque, albeit the more “refined” version, has since hit the mainstream, also largely attributable to the rise in popularity of celebrities such as Dita Von Teese.

Sex and Glita aim to keep their shows as bent and queer as possible, they have said, while welcoming women of all sexual persuasions.

“We want to empower ourselves and support each other as women, which is why the shows are for everyone, lesbians, mums and transgender … we don’t want the anti, straight people,” Sex said.

“We also want to break down the separation between butch and femme in the lesbian scene. We are women at the end of the day, we are just souls in bodies so let’s just get along – we are really not very different.”

Sex and Glita’s upcoming show will be slightly different from those before it, having moved from more casual bars to a nightclub.

The girls are excited about their journey to the “east-side”, claiming it feels like “Gurlesque is going to New York”.

Sex and Glita, Gypsy Wood, Vixen Noir, Lillian Star, Cxica BoomBoom, Sindy Ray, Wife and Feva will perform the shows – with the music being looked after by Sveta.

Just naming the performers was more information than was usually shared, Sex said, so all the other details “will be a surprise”.

See Gurlesque on Sunday 30 September at Arq, 16 Flinders St, Taylor Square. Doors open at 6pm, show starts at 7.15pm sharp, and after 11pm, it’s Arq nightclub’s regular Sunday night. Tickets are $20 or $25 at the door.

NoLita residents try to stop planned burlesque club

NoLita residents are trying to strip a West Coast impresario backed by singers David Bowie and Sting of the liquor license they need to open a swanky burlesque club.

"Forty Deuce," the proposed third branch of Ivan Kane's pseudospeakeasies in Los Angeles and Las Vegas named after the old slang for 42nd St., is on track to open at 19 Kenmare St.

Activists have gathered 2,000 signatures on a petition and are calling on residents to show their opposition at tonight's Community Board 2 meeting.

While the neighborhood is plastered with flyers in English and Chinese warning direly of stripteases until 4 a.m. - "Is that what we want in our community?" - residents fear drunken noise more than naked ladies.

"It's just going to be more people, more traffic, more liquor - and more people throwing up in the street," said Eric Dorfman, 46, an ad exec who lives three blocks away.

For 80 years, the site was home to Little Charlie's Clam Bar, a venerable Sicilian red-sauce joint that in good times had lines of mobster Cadillacs idling out front.

The community board, which initially approved the license, now wants to rescind it.

"We were pleased that Community Board 2 unanimously approved our application in April," Kane said in a statement. "We continue to act in good faith and look forward to discussing the merits of our application."

Tony Russo, 34, who is working on the project, was tearing down the flyers yesterday, calling them "propaganda."

"Everybody thinks it's a strip place like Scores. It's not that," he said. "This is going to be beautiful. They are spending $2.5 million on this place."

Burlesque, a classic mix of comedy and dancing girls that dates back to the vaudeville era, is enjoying a popular revival as "neo-burlesque."

Performers disrobe to pasties and panties, but unlike strippers, the emphasis is on elaborate costumes, old-fashioned, va-va-voom glamour and bawdy humor.

Kane is trying to take the vibrant neo-burlesque scene mainstream. His clubs are big successes, even though they charge $75 covers.

Sting, David Bowie back NY burlesque club

A Manhattan community board is poised to decide whether to approve a liquor license for a proposed celebrity-backed burlesque club, the New York Post said.

Sting and David Bowie are financing the construction of Forty Deuces, the latest endeavor of Las Vegas club king Ivan Kane.

The upscale music and dance club is being built along the border of Manhattan's Little Italy and SoHo neighborhoods.

But some locals argue that the huge new club might draw drunken crowds to the area's narrow streets, the Post said.

"The bigger clubs tend to attract people who don't live here," said musician T.J. Rosenthal, who lives around the corner from the proposed site.

Members of Community Board 2 were expected to discuss the club's liquor-license application Tuesday night.
