The life of Candy Barr: America's original hussy

Had Cinderella never happened upon her Prince Charming, the young debutante's life might have wound up something like that of 1950s burlesque queen Candy Barr.

In Candy Barr: The Small-Town Texas Runaway Who Became a Darling of the Mob and the Queen of Las Vegas Burlesque, biographers Ted Schwarz and Mardi Rustam relate an intimate account of the life of Juanita Dale Slusher, more famously known as burlesque dancer Candy Barr.

Biographies, unfortunately, are never as intimate as memoirs, which relay the person's emotions as well as their life story, but Candy Barr is nonetheless sprinkled with many tidbits from the woman herself.
Who was Candy Barr?

She was a sexually abused child in the hands of a pedophilic stepmother. She was a homeless runaway eating out of garbage cans. She was the accomplice to a safe-cracking burglar. She was a glamorously talented dancer. She was a convicted felon framed for marijuana possession. She was all of these things and more.

"Like a butterfly," said Barr, "I'd go around transforming. I created myself. I called myself a self-made schizophrenic." She considered anything to survive, even murder.

Born into poverty in 1935 to a Caucasian father and Choctaw/Cherokee mother, Barr learned about social injustices from an early age. Racism, sexism, misogyny and other prejudices followed her throughout her life. Dancing would be her one constant passion that would allow her to endure rape and involuntary prostitution.

Intricate details of the Dallas underbelly provide a rich backdrop for the biography, yet Schwarz and Rustam's descriptions of women being abducted, emotionally broken and then threatened into prostitution and escort services are all described in past tense, as though these horrors are not still rampant in larger cities.

This book would be more profound if the authors acknowledged that prostitutes' lives were brutal then and that they still are today.

The authors spend a hefty swath of their page count describing the burlesque show for those that aren't familiar with its history. They offer an intimate portrait of its satirical style, how it mocked hypocritical businessmen and politicians that pretended to be good family men but had mistresses or prostitutes on the side. These shows often consisted of singers, dancers and comics, including the as-of-then unknown Abbot and Costello.

After Barr stopped dancing and went to prison, burlesque shows dwindled into seedy strip clubs that gave the stage shows a bad reputation. These establishments were less than pristine, but in their dank hallows Barr proved nonetheless willing to rebuff advances by means of her explosive temper.

Candy Barr is packed with interesting tidbits from the 1950s. Barr starred in a play that mocked Marilyn Monroe. She witnessed racism destroy Sammy Davis Jr.'s life. She turned down Frank Sinatra's sexual advances. Her longtime friend Jack Ruby was the man who shot John F. Kennedy's alleged assassin, Lee Harvey Oswald.

Schwarz and Rustam don't use the linear storytelling methods familiar to most biographers, but instead weave their narrative in a spiral. They tell a fragment of her life, relay the next event and then loop back to the original fragment.

The end result is that the reader becomes immersed in juicy information before suddenly hitting a roadblock of repetitive facts. Jarred out of the prose, readers must then draw their own conclusions as to how the events progressed chronologically.

However, Barr's tumultuous life, which was never boring and often shocking, provides enough salacious detail to keep you engaged until the book's conclusion. Just don't expect a fairytale ending.

Dita Von Teese Models for new Foot Fetish Book

Dita Von Teese has been photographed for a new foot fetish book.

The burlesque performer - who is no stranger to stripping on stage - shows off her naked body and tiny feet in the new shots, taken by photographer Ed Fox.

Fox wrote: "The attractions of the foot, like the rest of a woman's body, are intriguing and a mystery. I really don't know why."

This is not the first time Dita has shown an erotic interest in feet and shoes.

Earlier this month, it was revealed the 35-year-old beauty was pleasured with a stiletto shoe in 1999 lesbian porn film 'Pin-Ups 2'.

Dita, the ex-wife of goth rocker Marilyn Manson, has previously admitted to being a fan of pornography.

She said: "Amateur pornography is a great thing. You can find anything for everyone on the internet. So long as no one's hurting anyone or involving children then hey, what's wrong with that?"

Lili St. Cyr and the Striptease Mystique

Lili St. Cyr shimmied her way to fame and fortune.

But once her star faded, she fell into obscurity. Now, the author of "Gilded Lili: Lili St. Cyr and the Striptease Mystique" dishes on the burlesque dancer's surprisingly wide influence on pop culture over the last 50 years.

In the Broadway musical Pal Joey, reporter Melba Snyder sings about meeting a Gypsy Rose Lee-esque character who skewers her competition in song. "Zip! My artistic taste is classic and dear," she sings. "Zip! Who the hell is Lili St. Cyr?"

Who is she? Try the most influential burlesque dancer in the second half of the 20th century. And, as I reveal in my just-out biography, "Gilded Lili: Lili St. Cyr and the Striptease Mystique," her hip-swiveling ways swayed pop-culture sirens for decades to come.

St. Cyr shimmied across the country with inventive routines well-suited for the posh nightclubs in which she performed. She amassed legions of famous fans, including Humphrey Bogart and Ronald Reagan. Her notoriety and fame brought financial and commercial successes, with roles in movies like Howard Hughes' "Son of Sinbad" and Norman Mailer's "The Naked and the Dead."

"I had never seen a more beautiful woman," says journalist Mike Wallace, who interviewed her in 1957 after watching her perform. "She was absolutely glorious to look at." Fifty years later, he says the interview remains one of the more interesting ones he has conducted.

St. Cyr died in 1999. A recluse during the two decades before her death, she has become largely unknown. Yet, her elegant dance moves and va-va-voom appeal influenced pop culture and its icons for half a century.

Burlesque and the Art of the Teese / Fetish and the Art of the Teese book review

Dita Von Teese has loved vintage clothing, sexy lingerie and burlesque all her life, and over the last decade has become the true queen of modern striptease, reviving the glories of 1940's and 1950's fashion almost single-handed (when she's not peeling it off in one of her routines!)

"Burlesque and the Art of the Teese"/"Fetish and the Art of the Teese" is, as the title implies, really two books, devoted to what you might call the "nice" and "naughty" sides of Dita. Side 1 is basically a historical overview of burlesque and striptease, profusely illustrated with gorgeous color and B&W photos of Dita in her persona as the heiress of Gypsy Rose Lee. Side 2 is devoted to an appreciation of fetishism, especially as it applies to the kinkier side of fashion, and is equally profusely peppered with "naughtier" pictures of fetish-queen Dita.

If you're a serious fan of Dita, you very likely already have this book, so I'm preaching to the choir. :) If you're not yet a serious fan but are interested in burlesque revival or fashion fetishism, definitely do get this book!

It is very simply the best book of its kind, beautifully produced, with stunning visuals by great photographers, superb art direction and, of course, Dita. She re-invents glamour. It takes a remarkable model and some great stylists to hold your attention through a one-woman "show" like this, but she does it, and looks great throughout, over the course of an unbelieveable variety of settings, wardrobe, lack of wardrobe, styles and situations. Nothing lewd at all, it's the "teese" that keeps you interested.

She takes the pinup style to the next level by including shots of herself in the most brilliant designer avantgarde fashion, Christian Louboutin stilettos and hand made corsets. Her fetish side includes her in traditional Japanese Bondage and paying homage to Ms. Bettie Page.

One of the coolest things that Dita did while putting this gem together was including her cheesecake burlesque side in one half of the book and her fetish dominant side in the other. All you must do to view both sides is simply flip the book to its backside. Would anyone expect something less from the Queen herself? Certainly not me.
