Dita Von Teese Hair Tutorial

Here is my attempt at doing the Dita Von Teese look.

This is a very distinguished hair style. You should care to pay attention to all details, such as making a straight line, smoothing away fly aways. Do not get lazy with this style!

I said in my video:
1) I don't claim to be like Dita.
2) I don't claim to look like Dita.

About the hair style:
1) This look will not work for every type of hair.
2) Short hair girls: in order for this look to work, your hair should be close to ear (at shortest) or shoulder length.

Burlesque Hair style Basics

Dita Von Teese hairstylesBurlesque hair

Are you prepared to give yourself the ultimate hair-mare?
You will need:

• Hair pins

• Hairspray

• Patience (and lots of it)

I've separated the hair part to it's own post because it is the most complicated, fiddly task of all (blame those old-movie stars and their hairdressers). See, burlesque performers and old-movie stars used rollers to create curls and pile their hair up into elaborate styles that literally took hours to achieve. Women in the 20's and 30's wore very tight waves made using rollers and the World War II pin-ups wore ringlets at the front of their heads or created one big roll with all their hair.

If your hair is long like mine, you had better make sure you're alone before attempting to style your hair because this will have you swearing like nothing else will!

I'm going to go through one method of styling hair that is easy for everyone. Well, easy-ish!

First

Brush your hair so that it is tangle-free, then make a ponytail with the front part of your hair. (If you have curly hair, straighten this part before you secure it). Back comb it slightly so it stands up like a quiff and secure it with LOTS of pins and hairspray.

Burlesque haircare tip: if you have shoulder-length hair, you could pin the ponytail into one curl just above your forehead and spray it into place.

Then

You can use rollers to put the rest of your hair into ringlets, or make a sleek bun at the back of your head. Secure it well so it doesn't fall out in the middle of the street!

And

If you want to, you can add false (or real) flowers, gemstones, any accessory you want really to make it stand out. British burlesque performer Immodesty Blaize pins jeweled birds and butterflies into hers!

Good luck with the hair styling!

A final word to all burlesque girls:

Be unique. If you like blue, go for a blue theme. If you have a thing for stripes, find a stripy outfit (or make one if you're that way inclined). There are plenty of accessories around with strawberry or cherry designs- you could plan an outfit around that, or around your favourite piece of jewelery.

Adapt the look to your own style and you can't go that far wrong!

If you want to learn more about the world of Burlesque, Dita von Teese's book "Burlesque and the Art of The Teese" is great, with some truly gorgeous pictures and inspiration.

You can get Dita's book, Burlesque and the Art of the Teese here.

Good luck ladies!

Retro Burlesque hair style guide

A cute retro guide to choosing the right hair style for your face.

The fortunate woman who is blessed with an oval face can wear any style that comes along with ease and flattery. But her less fortunate sisters who happen to have a long, thin face or a short, full face have a much more difficult problem on their hands.

For instance, the girl with a long face usually finds one style which is becoming and sticks to it because it does so much more for her than any other style she has ever worn. But being a woman, even a flattering style becomes boring after awhile, and she longs to wear a pompadour or a pompadour band or something new and different.

I believe it is possible for the girl with the long face to wear a pompadour and have it flattering just so long as it is styled for her facial contour. It wouldn't be the same pompadour that I would work out for her full-faced sister, but one that must of necessity be individually styled.

1. Pompadour for long, thin face
In the style designed for the long thin face, the hair is brought out at the sides to give the illusion of width. The pompadour is higher on the sides, dipping down in a diagonal wave in the center. The back hair is dressed in a full chignon which hides a long neck and gives flattering fullness to the lower part of the face.
2. Pompadour for short, full face
Here the hair is swept up close to the head on either side. The height of the pompadour is concentraded in the center - tapering off on either side. The back hair is cut short, and combed into casual curls that are placed well up on the neck. These curls should bluster close to the head behind the ears to give a soft profile line, but should not show from the front, as a general rule, because with the full face additional width at the jaw line is not desirable.
The same principles can be applied to pompadour bangs for the long face and the full face.

3. Pompadour bang fo
long, thin face

4. Pompadour bang for
short, full face

5. Feather cut for long, thin face

6. Feather cut for short, full face
Sketches 5 and 6 show two versions of the feather cut.
In each case the style for the long face gives fullness at the sides and at the neckline, while the style for the full face emphasizes height and as little fullness at the sides as possible.
7. Flat-top for long, thin face
The newest trend in hairstyles is the flat-top. Sketch 7 shows a flattering version of this style for the long, thin face. The hair is combed smooth across the top and the sides are combed out in vertical waves that stand away from the head to give the desired fullness.

Dita Von Teese Hair Style guide

I personally think one of the most striking things about Dita is her jet black curlicious hair.

Born a natural blonde the dark hue comes from the bottle and the curls are set in the traditional 40s way, i.e. get those rollers out darling!

If curlers are not your style, or you are a bit time poor a pair of barrel tongs are your best friend. On damp hair apply a heat sealer and some medium hold mousse. Divide into sections and wind around your large barrel tongs - hold until set. When the entire head of hair is curled set style with fingers and pin to create style.
